The Transfiguration of the Savior Valaam Monastery

Modern researchers attribute the foundation of the monastery to the beginning. XIV century . Already by the XV-XVI centuries the monastery became widely known in Russia. The Valaam brotherhood included famous ascetics and founders of many monasteries in Russia: Alexander Svirsky, Arseny Konevsky, Cornelius Paleostrovsky, Savvaty Solovetsky, Herman of Alaska, Antipas of Valaam. St. Peter had a great love for the monastery. Ignaty (Bryanchaninov).

From 1917 to 1940, Valaam was territorially part of Finland. In early 1940, the monks were evacuated to Finland.

On December 14, 1989, the first six monks arrived on the island to revive monastic life.

In 1991, the Valaam Monastery was granted the status of a stavropegic monastery.
